Scrabble: The Game That Made Me Realize How Vast and Unique English Vocabulary Is

 Hello readers who stumble upon this blog, my name is Fachry Putranto Sukarmin and in this blog I'll tell you about the new vocabularies I've learnt from playing a game called scrabble.


This is my first time playing scrabble, the picture below is my ten-ish attempt of trying to win against an expert bot. Thankfully there is no time limit so I could experiment with the amount of letters I had in my disposal.


Now let me tell you of the new vocabulary that I learnt from my winning attempt.


1. quiche (noun) : an unsweetened custard pie usually having a savory filling (such as spinach, mushrooms, or ham)

Example : While the menu changes daily, expect to find breakfast sandwiches and burritos, quiches, soups and salads, as well as pies, scones, cinnamon buns, and more.


2. Yew (noun) : any of a genus (Taxus of the family Taxaceae, the yew family) of evergreen gymnospermous trees and shrubs with stiff linear leaves and seeds surrounded by a fleshy red aril.

Example : There are evergreen conifers such as yews and junipers and, depending on your local climate, also broadleaf evergreen shrubs such as camellias that create year-round privacy.


3. Jiggers 

Noun : a measure used in mixing drinks that usually holds 1 to 2 ounces (30 to 60 milliliters)

Example : Cleaning Bar Tools Beyond Glassware For other types of bar tools like shakers, jiggers, pour spouts, and metal utensils, rinse thoroughly after use and wash with a mild detergent.

Verb : to jerk up and down

Example :  In addition to the A-10, Congress allowed the Air Force to jigger the B-1 bomber fleet.


4. Fucoidal (Adjective) : Related to or resembling seaweed, especially brown algae.

Example : The rock surface had fucoidal patterns.


5. Oaf (Noun) : a big clumsy slow-witted person

Example: anyone who took him for an oaf and tried to cheat him would be in for a nasty surprise


6. Tawie (Adjective) : (Scottish dialect) Gentle, tame, or calm in temperament.

Example : The cow was very tawie, letting the kids pet her.


7. Aba (Noun) : A long, loose robe made of thick wool, worn in the Middle East and North Africa.

Example : The traveler wore an aba to protect himself from the desert heat.


8. Odea (Noun [plural]) : Ancient Greek or Roman buildings used for music, poetry, or theatrical performances.

Example : The ancient odea once echoed with music and poetry.
 

9. Gox (Noun) : Gaseous oxygen, often used in aerospace.

Example : The short word GOX provided a burst of points, like a breath of fresh air.


10. Ted (Verb) : to spread or turn from the swath and scatter (new-mown grass) for drying.

Example : The farmer ted the hay in the morning so it would dry faster.
