Coursera: English Advanced C1 Module 1

Hello folks, and welcome back to my blog, my name is Fachry Putranto Sukarmin. Today I’m continuing my Coursera journey by talking about my experience in Week 1 of the English Advanced C1 course. Since this was my first week, everything still felt new, but it already gave me a clear idea of how the course works and what kind of learning style to expect. Here’s how my first module went.

In the first module, the course focused on how to make a good impression when meeting new people, both online and offline. The main goals were to use more expressive and natural language, improve vocabulary related to first impressions, and learn grammar structures such as cleft sentences to emphasize ideas more clearly. This module also introduced pronunciation tips and reflection tasks that helped me think about how I present myself in different social situations.

Throughout the week, I completed a series of short videos, readings, and practice assignments. The module began with the introductory videos Welcome to the Course and Meeting the Family, followed by a Video Language exercise where I scored 90%. The vocabulary and grammar sections introduced new expressions, modifiers, and emphasis structures, and I achieved full marks for most of the practice assignments, including vocabulary, grammar, expressive language, and pronunciation.

The rest of the module explored how we shape our self-image in digital spaces through activities like Creating an Avatar, Advertising, Critical Reflection on an Advert, and Instagram Impression. I also worked through several skill-based sections in reading, speaking, watching, listening, and writing. Most of these tasks were graded at 100%, and they helped reinforce the concepts from earlier in the module.

The week ended with the final graded assignment, End of Week 1 – Making a Good Impression, where I scored 90%.

Here are some examples of the assignment

My thoughts
After a week on Coursera, I found the platform easy to use and the materials in the English Advanced C1 course well-structured and useful. However, this specific class relies heavily on AI tools instead of real teacher feedback. Even the writing task asked me to use an AI assistant, and some videos use AI-generated voices. After exploring other Coursera classes, I noticed that some courses actually have real instructors, so the experience feels 50/50 depending on the class. Overall, I still learned a lot, but I think this course would feel more worth the price if it offered more human interaction.
